Providing education space from K4 t to Grade 12, the Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux School was designed to a brief requiring a cost effective, easy to maintain school facility that would also be efficient to operate.

An integrated design workshop was held at the onset of the project to determine effective strategies to achieve the project’s goals. The workshop included the school principal, staff and members of the School Board as well as the entire team of consultants involved in the design process.

A similar process was used in the design of the Stz’uminus Secondary School near Ladysmith and Academy of Lax kw’alaams. At the early stages of design development for both schools, the clients identified the need for a large covered outdoor and indoor areas to allow students to provide natural gathering spaces out of the rain.  Stz’uminus features dramatic 2-storey  space supported by columns that emulate the structure of the forest surrounding the school, and Lax kw’alaams students can gather and socialize in a two story light filled and colourful space.
