F.W. Howay Elementary School Seismic Upgrade

David Nairne + Associated in association with John A. Wallace, were selected by School District No. 40 to provide a Seismic Project Identification Report (SPIR) for Block 1 (Classrooms) and Block II (Gymnasium) of FW Howay Elementary School.  Both school blocks were identified as an H2 High Seismic Risk in the 2013 Rapid Seismic Risk Assessment Report.

The classroom Block 1 was built at the same time as the gymnasium Block 2 in 1973, utilizing the existing concrete foundations and wood frame floor structure, which remained following a previous fire in the school. There were several deficiencies associated with these Blocks which contributed to a new rating of H1 High Seismic Risk

Following the SPIR, DNA was selected to design the seismic retrofit upgrade for Block I and Block II. The scope of work for the Life Safety and Retrofits and Enhance Performance Retrofits (Block II) included:

  • Upgrading the steel roof deck diaphragm;
  • Upgrading the wood frame LDRS' with new plywood sheathing;
  • Upgrading the LDRS load path connections;
  • Upgrading the load path connections between the floor diaphragm and the perimeter foundation walls; and
  • Upgrading the unreinforced masonry walls for out-of-plane loading.

It’s in our DNA… Engagement. Respect. Expertise.
