Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School Seismic Upgrade

David Nairne + Associated in association with John A. Wallace, were selected by School District No. 40 to complete the detailed design for the seismic upgrade of Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary School.  David Nairne was responsible for the design and detailing of the seismic upgrade for both the Gymnasium Block and the three storey Classroom Block. Both school blocks were identified as an H1 High Seismic Risk in the Rapid Seismic Risk Assessment Report.

Lord Tweedsmuir Elementary is comprised of three blocks including a two-storey classroom (Block 1), gymnasium (Block 2) that were constructed in 1937 and a single-storey classroom addition (Block 3). The seismic upgrade utilizing the existing concrete foundations and wood frame floor structure. There were several deficiencies associated with Block 1 and Block 2 which contributed to a rating of H1 High Seismic Risk.

DNA designed the seismic retrofit upgrade for Block I and Block II utilizing SRG. The scope of work for the Life Safety and Retrofits and Enhance Performance Retrofits (Block II) included:

  • Upgrading the shiplap diaphragm with plywood;
  • Upgrading the wood frame LDRSs with new plywood sheathing on the interior;
  • Upgrading the LDRS load path connections;
  • Upgrading the load path connections between the floor diaphragm and the perimeter foundation walls;
  • Upgrading existing partition walls to shearwalls; and
  • New interior foundations in the crawl space.

It’s in our DNA… Engagement. Respect. Expertise.
