First Nation Construction Industry Education (FNCIE) Program

Hanceville, BC

The FNCIE approach specifically connected interested First Nation members with training and job experience in construction related professions and trades. Overall, the goal of FNCIE is to have 100% First Nation directed capital projects. It also maximized First Nation employment in the design and construction of teachers’ residences, a school gym addition and other local and regional projects.

The foundation for the FNCIE project was a Skills and Labour Assessment and Personal Skills Profiles completed by members of Yuneŝit’in and the Tsilhqot’in National Government. The Assessment gathered information including career interests, current and desired education and training and availability and interest in participating in the FNCIE project.  It also allowed members to reflect on their current skills and consider how they could be used in different capacities. This information was used to connect members with training and employment opportunities related to FNCIE.  It has also been used to connect interested members with projects in the wider region.
