Tla’amin Governance House

The Tla’amin Governance House is first and foremost a facility to meet community needs, with the majority of the operations involving governance and administrative functions for the Tla’amin Nation.

The Ancestors of the Tla’amin lived their lives guided by a complex system of practices and beliefs based on Ums Ta-ow (teachings) that sustained them for thousands of years and organized their Society around sophisticated Ums nah motl (traditional laws) that governed all forms of social, economic and political relations, including those relating to the use of resources within Tla’amin Territory and the Territory of other Coastal Nations.  Therefore, the Governance House is a physical expression and example that Tla’amin Governance is appropriate, and will help both visitors and community members understand Tla’amin Culture.

The entry area was designed to accommodate reception functions and exhibits showcasing the history of the Tla’amin, as well as their contemporary life and future plans – to showcase the Uhms Ta-ow.  The reception serves as a cultural and educational resource, a protective home for cultural resources as well as a source of inspiration, pride and welcoming to the living culture of the Tla’amin Nation.

The Governance house is a multi-purpose facility where community activities are offered, Hegus (Chief’s) and their clans meet, Tla’amin events are scheduled; instilling a sense of pride amongst members, guests, and the community.

It’s in our DNA… Engagement. Respect. Expertise.
