Lower Similkameen Community Building

The Lower Similkameen Community Building is located in the Lower Similkameen Indian Reserve approximately 7km from Keremeos. The design of the structure is a contemporary translation of the traditional tulle-mat hut dwellings. The community building consists of two distinct wings: an administration wing with meeting rooms, offices and workstations and a community wing with a full-size gymnasium, kitchen and fitness area. The two wings are joined by a central vaulted atrium.

The Community Building is a 2-storey conventional wood frame structure with prefabricated wood roof trusses and engineered wood joist floors. The building features an A-Frame vaulted central atrium framed with sloping steel HSS cross poles extending above the roof. The steel HSS cross poles theme continues along the exterior canopies of the two wings of the building.  The main staircase is a semi-helical wood staircase consisting of vertical and cross-braced dimensional lumber.
