Slarkedus Lake Access Road + Dam

Skidegate IR1 is located on the south-east corner of Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, BC. Work to provide an access road to Slarkedus Lake and complete upgrades to the dam structure were initiated after a Provincial Dam Safety Review determined that the dam posed a risk to the community and required maintenance access.

DNA was retained by Skidegate Band Council to provide design and construction engineering services for this project.

The Slarkedus Lake Access Road project consisted of the construction of 2.7 km of gravel road to access the existing dam structure on Slarkedus Lake, which serves as a storage facility for the Skidegate Water System. The project also consisted of the refurbishment of 0.7 km of existing logging road leading from the Skidegate Heights subdivision.

The Slarkedus Lake Dam Upgrade Design consisted of extending the existing dam berm using sheet-pile. Additional improvements to the intake structure included: improvements to the maintenance access, removal of the v-notch weir, replacement of the valve stems, and slip-lining of the culvert outlet. This concept minimized the impact to the adjacent wetland area and minimized the required excavation and fill.
