Huu-ay-aht Land Use Plan and Zoning Law
DNA’s Planning Team worked closely with the Huu-ay-aht Lands & Resource Committee over two years to develop a post-Treaty land use plan, as well as other related development documents. The project resulted in an official Land Use Plan (equivalent in content and legal status to an Official Community Plan) and Zoning Regulation documents.
We facilitated monthly Lands Team meetings which included Huu-ay-aht members and technical advisors. Throughout the process, we also worked closely with a Huu-ay-aht member who trained in GIS and land use planning. This member became the key developer of all the GIS mapping products for the Land Use Plan and Zoning Law.
The Huu-ay-aht Land Use Plan guides all future policies, includes Land Use Maps and Development Permit Areas, and covers development permit policies and procedures. The project also developed the Huu-ay-aht Zoning Regulation, which provides specific regulations and permitted uses for each of the zones identified in the Zoning maps. We worked with the Huu-ay-aht to carry out the legal review of these documents and referrals to relevant government agencies.
