Quw'utsun Smuneem Elementary School

The Cowichan Tribes are one of the most active, and progressive Indigenous communities in Canada. The Quw’utsun Smuneem Elementary School, located approximately 2km south of the Town Centre of Duncan, was perceived as an opportunity to not only meet the needs of the growing population, but also create an institutional building with cultural relevance. The new Elementary School for the Cowichan Tribes references a fishing structure and abstracts this cultural artifact into the structure and form of the school.
