Metlakatla Health Centre

The Metlakatla Health Centre is located in the remote community of Metlakatla approximately 25 minutes by boat from Prince Rupert, BC.

The facility is a contemporary reflection of the wood building traditions of the community, with the main entry and public spaces expressed through over-height glazing overlooking the community waterfront. Offices and health service spaces are located at the rear of the building. In the tradition of the longhouse the building bears signage and artwork that clearly identifies the building’s ownership and role in the community.

The facility design and construction processes were focused on sustainability using local materials and labour, natural ventilation, daylighting, and renewable energy sources to reduce operational costs.
