Northwest Territories Métis Nation (NWTMN) Interim Land Withdrawal

On behalf of the Northwest Territories Métis Nation (NWTMN) and the Métis Councils of the South Slave region (Hay River, Fort Resolution and Fort Smith), DNA has worked with local communities to identify lands and negotiate an Interim Land Withdrawal (ILW). Our team provided processes that enabled the Nation and Local Councils to reach a consensus on ILW proposals, allowing for effective negotiations with the Government of the Northwest Territories and Canada. This multi-year process included:

  • facilitating community engagement sessions,
  • briefing the NWTMN Board of Directors,
  • overseeing a network of Community Liaison Workers and preparing mapping and interview guides to structure their work,
  • facilitating discussions with Local Councils, and
  • negotiations with Federal and Territorial Government representatives at the Land Side Table.

To identify lands for the ILW and frame the negotiation discussions, DNA worked with stakeholder groups to determine areas that are:

  • historically significant to the NWTMN,
  • important for harvesting purposes,
  • ecologically sensitive lands,
  • required for watershed protection,
  • required for cultural, residential, and/or commercial reasons, and
  • important for NWTMN government infrastructure or other interests of the NWTMN.

It’s in our DNA… Engagement. Respect. Expertise.

We build inclusive and lasting relationships that connect people and provide potential to create sustainable communities. We are honoured to be operating on the unceded shared territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sk_wx_wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh).
